How do I know when a satellite will pass over me?

Which amateur radio satellites can a beginner work?

The FM “easy sats” like SO-50, AO-91, and the ISS cross-band repeater are the usual starting point — you can work them with a handheld and a small Yagi. Higher passes give you more time and a stronger signal.

What equipment do I need to work satellites?

For the FM birds, a dual-band HT, a small handheld directional antenna, and a pass prediction (like this one) is enough. You point at the satellite as it moves across the sky and adjust for Doppler.

What does maximum elevation mean for a pass?

Elevation is how high above the horizon the satellite climbs, in degrees. A 10° pass barely clears the horizon; a 70°+ pass goes nearly overhead, giving a longer window and clearer signal. Passes below 10° are hidden here.
